CAAC presents “Wave - Life and Death: Yuki Ideguchi”, curated by Kyoko Sato as a Program for Emerging Curators and Artists. This is an exhibition for 29-year-old Japanese artist Yuki Ideguchi, his first solo exhibition in New York City. Ideguchi’s works are based on the natural features, ideas, history and culture of Japan, with influence from China, other Asian cultures, and the United States. The aim of the exhibition is to foster greater understanding not only of Japanese culture, but also of cultural connections among Asia as a whole, and the United States. Visitors to this exhibition will have the unique opportunity to witness a piece of Asian cultural heritage influenced by China. Also it is of significance that CAAC, a Chinese organization, is holding a solo exhibition for the Japanese artist Ideguchi.
Ideguchi moved to New York shortly after finishing his MA in Japanese painting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. His talent was recognized at 16 when he received a design award at the “Exhibition of Fukuoka Prefecture” in 2002. His work was installed in an exhibition of a private collection at the world-renowned Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo in 2010, when he was 24.
Kyoko Sato is a curator and producer based in New York City. She proposed and coordinated “Ancient Egyptian Queens and Goddesses: Treasures from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York” (2014-2015) in Tokyo and Kobe. She coordinated and curated “Press Photo Exhibition; The Great East japan Earthquake” (2011) in New York (organized by the Nippon Club and the Asahi Shimbun) and Spain (organized by FNAC and the Asahi Shimbun). She is now organizing an exhibition “Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake” to be held at the Nippon Club in NYC early next year.
Ms. Sato started her career as a curator for contemporary art. She curated “Japonism in Contemporary Art” (2014, organized by the Nippon Club, NYC), “absorb their works sort of social sculpture no.2” (2014, as a part of Bushwick Open Studios, at 3rd Eye (Sol) Gallery, Brooklyn, NY), and served as one of the curators for “Re: Kontemporary, Fermented Souls” (2015, the Waterfall Mansion, NYC), celebrating the 50th anniversary of normalized ties between Japan and Korea, and the 70th anniversary of Korean independence. The United Nations Foundation supported her exhibition.
