Exhibition Statement

This series was created to convey my interest in how our minds can become suppressed and in turn distort space and reality through our individual emotions. My work depicts a continuing study of figures through various stages of time. Each piece is set in an ambiguous, rather unsettling interior. The anonymous figures are set to create tension within the structure and convey a feeling of turbulence as they float through expanded space and distorted time. The impractically placed doors do not lead to any particular destination, which, only adds to the terrifying uneasiness regarding our feelings towards reality and the unknown.

I repeatedly used different sized brushes and multiple hand movements in order to create the figures from the inside out and vice versa. It helped me to construct imperfections and distortions of the figures adding to the feel of desperation and deformation intertwined within the interior. The paintings were created with the hope that the viewers would inject themselves into the work and to interpret each piece with their own convictions.
