History & Mission

The Chinese-American Arts Council (CAAC) was established in 1975 to meet the cultural needs of the expanding New York Chinese community and to introduce the best of the rich Chinese cultural heritage to the greater New York community. Each year, CAAC coordinates and presents at least twelve solo and group exhibitions featuring the works of professional Asian American artists of innovative ideas at the Council's own facility, Gallery 456, and other sites around the city. Opened in April 1989, Gallery 456 is a 700 sq. ft. well-lit, column free space open to the public. It is the first non-profit Asian American gallery in SOHO. Gallery 456 helps CAAC to fulfill its mission by introducing emerging Asian-American artists into American mainstream by increasing their visibility. The gallery also provides a central location for interchange of ideas among artists and maintains as the vital part of an international communication networks for Asian artists working on contemporary art.
