Pak-hing Kan is a ceramic artist who creates intimate, small-scale, delicate boxes that are exquisitely painted on all surfaces. She designs a unique silk wrap to accompany each piece. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Asia also in public museums and private collections. She is the recipient of many awards including Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant 2006, Creative Capital grant 2006, and Manhattan Community Arts Fund Grant 2006. She also earned a residence in Fuping (www.FLICAM.com), China 2007 and in Jingdezhen, China 2008.
Kan was born in China and grew up and studied art in Hong Kong starting at a young age. She received a B.Ed. degree from Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan and a B.A. degree from College of St. Catherine and did her graduate study in ceramics at the University of Minnesota, both in Minnesota, USA. She continues to study drawing and painting privately with Julio Alpuy and at the Art Students’ League, NY.
Today, Kan lives and maintains a studio in New York City. Her recent works are in a cave- house form, each with an intriguing storytelling scene for the viewer to discover.
Kan was a textile print designer and artist before she devoted herself fulltime to ceramic art in 1995.
