Good art should at least possess these three characteristics: that it originates from a significant personal experience, that it speaks to the human condition, and that it plays skepticism towards the institutions. The artwork then can inspire, broaden our awareness and understanding of the world, and make reference to the society to which it belongs. To this end, how art is received and consumed is just as important as how it is made.
As commercialism is making imaging tools increasingly simpler, and hence, more accessible, photography’s meaning, purpose and agency are being understood more differently by the masses and by art professionals. I believe art should be just as accessible to the masses; consequently, one of my present goals in art making is to listen to ideas from both sides as a means to define a standpoint that can help me speak of this medium in a way that represents our time better.
I draw my ideas from human behaviors seen from the perspectives of survival mechanisms and animal instincts, as well as from human relationships with one another and with our immediate surroundings that play to our states of mind, collective memories and universal emotions. I prefer keeping myself open to learn from the subject that I work with. This meditative process usually allows the subject to reveal itself to me through an unexpected point of view.
