Yi Hsuan Lai is a Taiwanese lens-based artist based in New York City. She incorporates photography, sculpture, and performance to make surreal staged photographs and photographic collages that reflect the fluidity of the body, complexity of self-identity and Otherness. Inspired by her emigration and feminine experience to make her practice revolves around playful construction and deconstruction. She makes the assemblages for the camera through discarded and found objects and represents their transient and unstable status into bodily and psychic landscapes. Yi Hsuan experiments with the elasticity of photography by using altered printing materials and sculptural presentation to create a dialogue between tangible sensibility and tactile ambiguity within a space. Her work provokes the audience’s longing for touch and revaluation of precarious materiality into a physical and otherworldly representation.
