Pak-hing Kan
Pak-hing Kan began as a painter, established herself as a fabric artist and now devotes fulltime to ceramic art. She works with traditional materials (clay and glaze) to make an old conceptual form (the box) in a contemporary way. She creates intimate, small-scale boxes that are exquisitely painted on all surfaces. She designs a unique silk wrap to accompany each piece. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Asia. She is the recipient of many awards including Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for painters & sculptors, 2006 and Manhattan Community Arts Fund Grant, 2006.
Kan was born in China and grew up in Hong Kong. She received a B.ED. from Taiwan Normal University and a B.F.A. from the college of St. Catherine in Minnesota, USA. She did graduate study in ceramics at the University of Minnesota, USA and continue study life drawing at Art Students' League, New York.
Today, Pak-hing Kan lives and works in New York City. Her recent works are old houses box form, each with an intriguing storytelling scene for the viewer to discover. She is currently working on a series about cave living and underworld living.
