Submission Guidelines

Gallery 456 accepts proposals from artists and curators for solo or group exhibits on an ongoing basis. There is no deadline and submissions are reviewed periodically by a committee to plan a cohesive collection of shows for the upcoming season. Proposals not initially selected will be kept on file for future reference.

Selected artists/curators will be notified, usually within six months of submission, to discuss scheduling and logistics. We don't automatically inform artists if their proposal was not selected, as those works may still be considered in future committee reviews; however, you may email us with any questions about your submission. Please, do not call the office.

We have displayed works in many formats: painting, prints, photography, as well as sculpture (wall-mounted, hanging, free-standing, or pedestal display), ceramics, textiles, video, multi-media, and installation art. Though, as our exhibit space connects to an office, there may be practical constraints for showing works with sound, video, lighting, or electronic components (which we may need to turn off when not being viewed), or installations that significantly obstruct the space. Additional size and weight restrictions might apply for large pieces. See gallery floor plan. Please email us with any questions.

Eligibility

Submissions are open to all. However, be mindful that the mission of the gallery is to support and promote emerging and mid-career artists primarily of Chinese or other Asian heritage -- it is unlikely we would present a solo show for a non-Asian artist, and for group shows most participants should be of Asian descent.

Costs and Responsibilities Overview

There is no fee to submit proposals.

We primarily provide exhibition space, staffing, promotion to the local media and our mailing list, as well as an opening reception. We do not offer stipends or transportation. Artists are responsible for shipping/transporting and installing the work, and any expenses specific to their show (such as equipment, repairs, etc., if needed). It varies, but for many artists their only expenses are related to getting their work to us and then installing the exhibit and subsequent take down.

As a non-profit space, we are not primarily concerned with the commercial viability of the gallery shows we select and it is not our main function to sell work. Often pieces are included for exhibit only. However, participating artists may certainly list works for sale if they choose -- and many do. In the event work is sold, a small commission is due CAAC to support our ongoing programming.

This website overview is for reference: actual costs and responsibilities will be specified in a written agreement.
