Exhibition Statement

Island Pulp explores how the magic within us grows through our encounters with nature and the world around us. Drawing on Taiwanese folklore, island mythology, animistic beliefs, and personal memory, Hsin Hwang creates vivid, fantastical worlds where human, natural, and spiritual life intertwine. Through saturated color and recurring imagery of girls, fruits, flowers, and flames, her practice considers the relationship between feminine experience, faith, and the unseen forces of nature. Her figures, often depicted with braided hair and closed eyes, rest in quiet contemplation, nested within fruits, sheltered by plants, or gathered together.

The exhibition brings together acrylic paintings, painted wooden figures, and a collection of watercolor drawings, extending Hwang's exploration of belonging, protection, and transformation. This exhibition introduces the artist’s first attempt in encorporating hand-sewn ruffles, patterned cotton and linen, yarn, and sequins into her paintings.

The title joins two interdependent worlds: the island, a landscape of home, passage, and encounter, and pulp, the soft, protected interior of fruit — a place of nourishment, vulnerability, and potential.. The island nurtures the fruit, while the fruit carries something of the island wherever it travels. Echoing the journey of Taiwanese tropical fruits overseas and Hwang's own experience of living abroad, the exhibition considers how memories of home and cultural identity are carried into new environments and transformed through new relationships.

Inspired by the narrative tradition of folk murals, the works unfold along the gallery walls as a journey of shelter, awakening, exploration, gathering, and becoming. The fruit-bearing girls become travelers and companions, carrying what they have gathered from place to place, sometimes guided by light and sometimes becoming its source. The journey opens into in a devotional sanctuary where fruits, flowers, and female figures come together in a space of abundance and quiet reverence, inviting reflection on the spiritual connections between ourselves and the natural world.
