Bovey Lee
Artist Statement

Bovey Lee is a Hong Kong born, Pittsburgh-based artist. Her paper cutouts unite digital technologies and handcraftsmanship to contemporize a fading folk art, Chinese paper cutting. Her impossibly intricate and highly complex paper cutouts explore our universally shared experience of power, sacrifice, and survival.

Bovey’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Museum Bellerive in Zurich, Switzerland; Scope/Art Asia fairs in Miami, Florida and Basel, Switzerland; National Glass Centre, Sunderland, UK; Rossi & Rossi Gallery, London, UK; Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; Asian American Arts Center, NY; Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Pittsburgh; Kennedy Museum of American Art, Athens, OH; University of California at Santa Barbara, CA; Museum of Fine Arts, Beijing, China; Fukuoka Museum of Art, Fukuoka, Japan; and others. Her works are held in the permanent collection of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology at Oxford University, United Kingdom, Hong Kong Museum of Art, and in corporate and private collection. Bovey’s work is represented by Grotto Fine Arts Gallery in Hong Kong.

In 2009, Bovey is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation award. In 2008, Bovey received the Ruth & Harold Chenven Foundation Award and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship. In 2007, the Vira I. Heinz Endowment Fellowship awarded her an artist residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She was also a nominee of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award and was named Mid Career Artist by the Asian American Arts Center in New York. Additionally, she has received multiple grants from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. Among other awards include Jack K. and Gertrude Murphy Fine Arts Fellowship from the San Francisco Foundation, CA and Urban Council Fine Arts Award, Hong Kong.
