2018.2.14 | Folk Art |CAAC Celebrating Chinese New Year with Chun-Lian Making ....moreEvent Date: Feb 14, 2018 3-5pm Location: Gallery 456 @ Chinese American Arts Council (456 Broadway, 3F, New York in SOHO) Co-presented by the Chinese-American Arts Council (CAAC), the Chinese Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Association, and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York (CMENY)l
As the Chinese New Year draws closer, households put up chun-lian: calligraphic works of auspicious poems on red paper to express an aspiration for renewal and happiness in the coming year. To celebrate the Chinese New York, the Chinese-American Arts Council (CAAC), the Chinese Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Association, and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York (CMENY) are holding the first-ever Chun-lian Giveaway! Paper cutting master Shu-Shia SANBORN and master calligrapher and painter Li-fu Zhang will be present providing complimentary chun-lian to the public. The Chinese Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Association will moreover be holding tutorials on calligraphy and creating on-the-spot artwork incorporating names of visitors.
Artistic administrator Flavia Lin of the CMENY indicates that the driver of this event is to, on one hand, provide the Chinese-American community in New York with a chance to showcase the spirit of the traditional new year, but also to tie together non-profit organizations in New York to present and preserve traditional Chinese art forms. Alan Chow, chairman of the CAAC, further highlights that beyond promoting the holiday, this event is meant to raise awareness around chun-lian, an important Chinese traditional art form in its own right. The organizers encourage the public to bring their children along to see chun-lian being made and to develop an increased appreciation for Chinese culture and art.

2017.9.1 | 2017-2018 CAAC workshops on Chinese Opera and Martial Arts at Symphony Space ....moreChinese American Arts Council (CAAC) signed an agreement with Symphony Space's Global Arts Program, in conducting series of Workshop, Cultural Field Trip and After School Program.
In this agreement, during 2017-2018, CAAC will conduct periodic workshops and demonstrations on Chinese Opera and Martial Arts. Artists from CAAC were trained in China and who were stars of the Beijing and Shaoxing Opera Troupes. Recipients of numerous awards for their work in China, these artists specialize in warrior roles and are skilled in many styles of theatrical martial arts. Their performances and workshops introduce students and teachers to works from the Beijing, Shaoxing, Kun and Cantonese Opera repertories.
Teaching artists perform and discuss the five elements of traditional Chinese opera—singing, talking, acting, fighting, and tumbling--with students, providing a deeper understanding of the discipline. An exploration of these elements elicits interactive discussion, learning the five elements in the Mandarin language, and practice with stage fighting skills, movement, and mime.

2017.4.22 | 456 Forum | Screening: Qinmin Liu & Shurui Li ....more456 Forum @ Gallery 456
April 22, 2017, 6:30-9:30p 456 Broadway, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10013
On April 22 2017, curated by William Song, 456 Forum will host a screening of video collaboration of Qinmin Liu and Shurui Li, followed by Q & A and open discussion.
Open to Public, Free Admission, door opens at 6:30p, screening starts at 7p.
Introduction:
Qinmin is long interested in researching the philosophy of choreography which existed outside of dance. Her choreographic practices become a demonstration of her own cultural identity and an understanding of the social structure.
Qinmin graduated from Dance department of San Francisco State University. She represented San Francisco State University at 2013 American College Dance Festival and became the only student whose performance went to Gala. In 2015, Qinmin had been selected as the cover artist of San Francisco Weekly newspaper. Qinmin is interested in choreography, performance, installations, music, video, site-specific work and performing in TV shows. Her works have been shown at institutions such as: San Francisco Asian Art Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, American Dance Festival, San Francisco Runway@Twitter building, SOMarts culture center, Australia women media art and film festival, SAFEhouse art center, Dance mission theater, Present company gallery, Ying Space in Beijing, etc.
Born in Chongqing in 1981, Shurui Li is a 2004 graduate of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. Li Shurui has been hailed as a leading emerging female Chinese artist by The New York Times and International Herald Tribune and is one of the few women to hold solo shows in China’s commercial art galleries. She is exploring in a wide range of media the relationship between space and light, with painting and installation.
Forbes Life Style and Editor Y-Jean Mun-Delsalle writes “Today, Li is recognized for her large-format, captivating acrylic-on-canvas compositions executed with the airbrush, which explore an abstract concept of light, guaranteeing that audiences will never look at light and color in the same way again. Light and color, as we know, share an intimate relationship, for what the eye perceives to be a certain hue is because that shade is reflected while all other colors are absorbed when light shines on an object. Li also professes a close relationship with the theme of “space”, as the immensity of her artworks allows viewers to feel completely surrounded and fully engaged. However, her aim is not so much to convey a viewpoint as to provoke emotions. She elaborates, “I try to use light and space to capture an atmosphere and state of mind in a way that leave people with a strong emotive impression rather than a concept or idea that must be dealt with logically.” Chinese Artist Li Shurui Creates Optical Illusions Through Her Semi-Abstract Light Paintings, May 26, 2015.
In 2013, she participated in ON | OFF: China’s Young Artists in Concept and Practice, which was regarded as a landmark exhibition showcasing artists representative of the country’s new generation.
Li Shurui has been exhibiting widely in Asia and Europe. Her work was included in the Estrella Collection. Solo exhibitions include: ‘Monadology’, White Space Beijing, Beijing, China; The Shelter: All Fears Come from the Unknown Shimmering at the Edge of the World’, White Space Beijing, Beijing, China. Recent group shows include: 'No Longer / Not Yet', Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, China; 28 Chinese – Rubell Family Collection’, Asian Art Museum and San Antonio Museum of Art,San Francisco and San Antonio, USA; ‘Jing Shen – The act of painting in contemporary China’, PAC Museum of Contemporary Art, Milan, Italy; ‘The Making of a Museum’, Aurora Museum, Shanghai, China; ‘ON|OFF China's Young Artists In Concept and Practice’, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), Beijing, China; ‘Long March - A Walking Visually Display’, Long March Space, Lugu Lake, China.
